Developing countries have difficulties implementing lasting development programs that address essential public health needs due to constraints such as corruption, poverty, lack of resources etc. NGOs have stepped in, raising management concerns over NGOs as primary service providers and the sustainability of services provided. Student Opportunities to Advance Research & Scholarship or SOARS research forums are conducted each term by the Univesity of Maryland Global Campus' (UMGC's) doctoral students in the final stages of their dissertations. Doctoral candidates present their academic research and engage in discourse with UMGC faculty, students, staff and alumni. Research is presented in poster format highlighting method, findings and management practice implications.
Sustainability framework​
A conceptual model is developed out of the systems theory to give us a better understanding of the organizational sustainability phenomenon. It outlines the possible course of action or mechanism to arriving at the phenomenon, and as such, includes the BIG 3 predictors of organizational sustainability.
Sustainability factors
A total of nine factors emerged from a recently conducted systematic review. These factors found a natural grouping that includes the following factors: individual-level, organization-level, and community-level factors.
NGO sustainability​
For the purposes of these series of blogs, NGO sustainability is defined as: “the surviving and thriving of an organization beyond its initial funding stream to serve future generations; the viability of an organization, post initial support, to continuously carry out programmatic activities and achievements in order to reach the desired outcome.”
Role of NGOs​
Ever heard of “non-profit” or “not-for-profit”? NGOs are its international equivalent. Well, sort of. NGO stands for non-governmental organization and are sometimes referred to simply as private voluntary organizations. NGOs are voluntary groups of individuals or organizations (entity) organized at the local, national or international level.
